Dan Lu celebrates Yao heritage

Musician Dan Lu has organised a concert in Mangochi on December 31 to promote Yao traditional dances as well as up-and-coming Yao musicians.

The event to take place at Zithere Pano Club in Mangochi will see Dan Lu share the stage with fellow musicians from Mangochi with the overall aim of promoting Yao traditions.

Dan Lu: I want to thank my people from home

“I have realised that many Yao artists do not have the privileges and level of success that I have achieved over the years. So, I want to try and help them get exposure during the event dubbed Wachiyao Wangalusa Concert,” he said.

Dan Lu said manganje dances and other Yao traditional dances will also be performed.

“I want to thank my people from home [Mangochi] for the support rendered to me all these years as a musician. Though I do not sing in Yao, they take me as their own,” he said.

The phrase ‘wachiyao wangalusa’ means ‘Yaos never fail’ and has been used by the artist to promote his music and to celebrate his heritage for years.

The artist has also composed a special song for the event titled Wachiyao Wangalusa.

One of the artists scheduled to perform at the event, Carbon, real name Harry Zing’ombe, said he is looking forward to the event.

“Yaos are good people and they love their culture. They also easily embrace other people’s cultures which makes them unique,” he said.

Carbon said he will give the event his best shot and ensure that he wins the support of the people and hopefully gets signed by Dan Lu’s record label.

Dan Lu, born Dan Lufani, has been making music for over 20 years. He has, experimented with various music genres such as Afro-pop, amapiano and R ‘n’ B.
