Dancing to Gaba’s tune

Listen to this article

Gabadinho Mhango cannot be compared to superstar footballers such as Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi, but he is a football genius, our own version of Ronaldo and Messi. No wonder when he failed his Junior Certificate examinations, it created a lot of flurry, especially on social media networks.

Such was the flurry that some chaps went out of their way and posted on Facebook insinuating that answering to an Agriculture question on two types of chickens, Gaba wrote: “Half and full-chicken”. That was not all, there was yet another fella who taunted that in answering to the type of a triangle in a Geometry paper, Gaba wrote: “Biwi Triangle.” Others even said that during a Physical Science paper, he had no clue what-so-ever and resorted to drawing his Brazilian idol Ronadinho scoring a spectacular goal just to pass time.

But for all this mockery, the boy Gaba did not lose focus and has now taken South Africa’s superdisk by storm with his magical skills so much that his exploits are being splashed on the back pages of South Africa tabloids. And it is refreshing that for a change, the stories that are making headlines in the foreign media about Malawi are not about Cashgate, but Gaba’s exploits.

And just recently, he scored in three consecutive league games for his club Bloemfontein Celtic. The goal that fascinated me most was the one against SuperSport United. Gaba’s beauty was a piece of sheer individual brilliance.

With the game on the edge, and only 11 minutes of regulation time left against Matsatsanta, Gaba took matters into his hands with a superb display to break the defensive shield of a plucky SuperSport that gave as much as they got in a feisty encounter— a deft touch with his right foot, all this done in motion with a defender on his shoulder, gave him control of the ball and his pace swept him past the defender, then in a flash, he clipped the ball with his left leg past a bemused SuperSport goalminder, here was a boy wonder at work.

So, while those that find luxury in taunting the boy on social media can continue doing so, for even without a JCE here is a fella who is not only making his motherland proud, but is also making a quick buck that should enable him build a mansion at his remote home village of Chiweta in Rumphi or indeed the surbubs of Area 43 in the capital, not out of Cashgate, but his sweat and sheer brilliance.

AOB: Koma mpaka 6-0? Shaaa!!! Nkhanza kwa abambo!…Arsene Wenger, Arteta, Podolski, Carzola, Rosicky, Giroud, agawane chimodzi chimodzi, ngati zapelewera azungu amati there’s always next time. Glory be to God! Uloliwe.. Uloliwe wayidudula Hi..Nang’esiza! [The train is pushing!]
