Dangote ready to invest in Malawi—Envoy

New Nigeria High Commissioner Stanley Diriyai has told President Peter Mutharika that Africa’s richest man and Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote is interested to establish a fertiliser-making plant in the country.

Speaking after presenting his letters of credence to the President at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe on Tuesday, the envoy said establishment of the fertiliser plant would boost Malawi’s agriculture sector and see the country save on foreign exchange.

To invest in Malawi? Dangote

Diriyai said the interest from Dangote also follows establishment of the relationship between Malawi and Nigeria.

Said Diriyai: “With the President, we also talked about free movement of our people between the two countries; hence, we need to ease the process of acquiring visas.”

Malawi imports all its fertiliser for lack of a manufacturing plant, a development that leads to the high cost of the soil-enriching nutrients.

However, the Nigerian High Commissioner could not say how soon Dangote will start this investment.

Dangote owns Dangote Group which has diverse investments in commodities and manufacturing, among others.

  1. That might be a good idea. As the minds of poor citizens are now far away from government subsidy programme. I hope with that idea fertiliser price will go down one day
