Nine youth volunteers under the Danish Church Aid (DCA) arrived in Mchinji on Friday where they familiarised themselves with Malawian culture and stay with beneficiaries of DCA programmes to appreciate the vulnerability of the people.

During their two-day stint in Mchinji, the Danish youth last Saturday helped thatch with fresh grass a roof of a house belonging to a 75-year-old widow, Mary William, of Robert 4 Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Zulu in Mchinji.

The youth’s gesture was a dream come true for William who said in an interview that she was in deep thoughts about who would help her roof the grass-thatched house.

The Danes, who will be in the country for three months, therefore offered her timely assistance.

She said: “I am so glad that these people have come to help, at first I didn’t know what sort of help they wanted to give me. I just told them I need a good roof for my house, now they are starting to buy the necessary materials to do it today. I am so grateful to the Lord for their gesture.”

DCA relations officer Francis Botha said the youth programme started 28 years ago and has been running in the country ever since.

He said the main aim is to expose the Danish youth to developmental challenges that are experienced by ordinary Malawian families.

One of the volunteers, 20-year-old Mads Kruse, said he was happy to be in Malawi to experience the real local life which will enable them to demand more for Malawi.

According to Botha, DCA is a humanitarian organisation which looks into the welfare of the underprivileged and believes in giving people a better life before their deaths.
