The Development Aid from People to People (Dapp) last week donated used clothes worth K1.8 million (about $5 294) to flood victims in Malawi’s lakeshore district of Mangochi.

Dapp Malawi assistant administration officer Cedric Masikamu said they helped the victims because of the appeal for support President Joyce Banda made recently.

“It is unfortunate that people have lost their belongings,” said Masikamu.

Receiving the items on behalf of the victims, Nangoma Village Camp chairperson Ositala Kalembo thanked Dapp for the donation and asked other well-wishers to come to their rescue.

Special adviser to the President on civil society and nongovernmental organisations, Reverend McDonald Sembereka also expressed gratitude to Dapp for the kind gesture.

“As government, we want to other organisations to help these flood victims, especially in rebuilding their lives,” he said.

Sembereka said government is working hard to find a permanent solution to the flood problem by, among other things, reafforestating bare lands.

Flush floods displaced about 3 500 people in Mangochi early last month.
