Acoustic musician Davis Njobvu’s song has been featured in a South African play which is set to tour provinces in the rainbow nation starting this coming Easter weekend.

The play, You are an Eagle by The Calling/Ubizo Production and set to be performed to school children, has incorporated Zoona, one of the songs in Njobvu’s upcoming solo album.

Playwright Khanyisile Vilakazi said the theatrical performance is a story of an eagle’s egg that is blown by the wind from its village into a chickens village. The egg hatches and is raised by a chicken.

“With a cast of 14, You are an Eagle is a musical play for children from the age of 5. It is motivational and educational with a lot of humour and is relevant as it has current dances, music and it is multi lingual. It highlights issues of bullying, low self-esteem and motherly love. It also encourages and motives one to believe in one’s self,” she said.

Vilakazi said she came across Njobvu’s song when she was searching for international gospel songs on the Internet. Despite that she could not make out the message, she ‘loved’ it and tracked down the musician to ask for permission to use it.

In a separate interview, Njobvu, who together with fellow lawyer and friend Edgar Kachere make up the acoustic duo of Edgar ndi Davis, said he hopes to create more opening from the opportunity.

“As an artist, I would want to support The Calling Production and in turn I am sure they will support me. Possibly, together, we could work on something they can bring to Malawi. This can also open opportunities for other local artists in Malawi. I see endless possibilities,” he said.

Njobvu’s upcoming gospel album from where Zoona is featured is an individual project that the musician is working on for  release later this year. n
