Skippers, who were the defending champions, just needed a point to retain the honours courtesy of their superior goal difference, as the two teams were tied on 25 points.

However, they succumbed to second half goals from Wezzie Mvula and Funny Mwale who scored in the 63rd and 68th minutes, respectively.

With the win, Sunshine have finished top with 28 points, three ahead of Skippers.

DD Sunshine coach Andrew ‘Aluki’ Chikhosi was on cloud nine.

“Our game plan worked to perfection as we needed a win at all cost. I told the girls to take it as a cup final,” he said.

His Skippers counterpart, Collins Pofera, struggled to come to terms with the painful reality.

“The girls relaxed towards the end of the game and lost concentration. Their focus was to get a draw,,” he said.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) vice-president James Mwenda, who was the guest of honour, said he was impressed with the standard of play.

Central Region Women Football Association (CRWFA) chairperson Suzgo Ngwira said the league was competitive; hence, the champion was decided on the last day.

Skippers’ striker Linda Kasenda won Golden Boot  Award with 48 goals.

Chilinde Queens finished third with 13 points while Hungry Lions were fourth with eight points. n
