Decipher unspoken expectations

In an ideal world, no one would be in doubt about what’s expected of them, but expectations are not always feasible. Asking questions to clarify expectations is practical. Here are some ways you can identify unspoken expectations.

What problems can I help solve?:

Choose to do something about problems instead of complaining. You don’t have to have solutions, but you can start with suggestions. Always be conscious of what’s going on around you to help make things better. Be someone who co-operates and works with others to get the job done.

Where can I show leadership?:

Every environment could use leadership and people who get recognition and promotion quicker. Be eager to take on new initiatives, even if they seem daunting. Leading does not mean doing the work yourself. Lead by working with others to achieve milestones and ensuring relevant people are involved.

What can I learn?:

Pick up cues, take note of work that is recognised and acknowledged. Pay attention to all communications from key people. For example, there might be an expectation that team members will support each other. In that context, if you do your own job exceptionally well— while others on the team struggle— you may come across as not advancing team goals. Know the limits of your discretion so that you function successfully within the right structure, boundaries and accountabilities.

How can I work to the full picture?:

Don’t be fragmented in your approach or box yourself into ‘’your little bit’’. Have a plan for completing well whatever you. This approach will show that you know what to do and how to do it well. It also makes it easier for those with an interest in what you’re doing to size up quickly and see the value of your work.

Now take action:

Identify one thing to do that would be your usual standard of work.
