Dedza drug vendor fined K150 000

The Dedza third grade magistrate’s court on Thursday slapped 38-year-old vendor Victor Ulaya with a fine of K150 000 for being found in possession of medical drugs without a license.

Ulaya was arrested last week after police found him with the medical drugs amounting to K831,263.00.

drugsThe medical drugs included doxycycline, metronidazole, aspirin, cotrimoxazole and amoxicillin just to mention a few.

He pleaded guilty to the charges leveled against him and paid the fine right away.

Third grade magistrate Christopher Kampaliro also granted bail to two hospital personnel Lameck Mbendela, driver and Sifuliyano Nkhundula medical technician who were suspected to have supplied Ulaya with the medical drugs.

Hearing of the case starts on 18th of this month.

Meanshile,Police in Blantyre have arrested 42-year-old man for illegal possession of medical drugs without a license.

Police in Blantyre on have arrested 42 year old Raymond Jonathan for being found in possession of medical drugs without a licence.

Southern Region Assistant Police Public Relations Officer Peter Mchiza said Raymond Jonathan was found with various medical drugs including antiretroviral drugs, bactrim, TB drugs and Asthma inhalers.

“We arrested him at Blantyre free market where he was selling the medicine discreetly after we got a tipoff from well wishers,” Mchiza said.

He said investigations were still underway to establish where Jonathan got the drugs.

Mchiza has since advised the general public not to buy medical drugs from vendors for they might be given wrong prescriptions or the drugs might be expired which might bring in other complications.

He also warned those dealing in illegal medical business that the law will take its course on them.

Jonathan hails from Chipojola village in the area of Traditional Authority Chakhumbira in Ntcheu.
