D evelopers have started encroaching developing in areas reserved for the K3.9 billion Jenda-Edingeni Road in Mzimba despite government compensating them.

Roads Authority (RA) spokesperson Portia Kajanga said in an interview yesterday her organisation fears the encroachment will affect monitoring of defects.

The road is supposed to have a one-year defects liability period in which the contractor is supposed to fix any problem that would arise.

“Encroachment will see some people setting fire close to the road which will affect curing,” she said.

Kajanga said the road is yet to be handed over to government and warned that RA will demolish any structure that will be erected near the road.

Mzimba district commissioner (DC) Thomas Chirwa said he needed more time to get details on the matter.

RA has completed 15 kilometres of the 53-kilometre road and is now trying to source funds for phase two.

Discussions with co-financier Abhu Dhabi Fund for Development is under way, according to the authority.  n
