DHO takes over control of Mzuzu satellite clinics

The Mzimba District Health Office (DHO) has taken over the control of satellite clinics in Mzuzu City to reduce pressure at Mzuzu Health Centre and Mzuzu Central Hospital.

Mzuzu City Council was running the satellite clinics until it closed them a few years ago due to financial problems.

The closure prompted residents and small-scale traders to encroach some of the clinics premises such as the Zolozolo Clinic.

“There are several clinics that were under the city council, but were non-functional, a development that saw residents going to Mzuzu Health Centre or Mzuzu Central Hospital,” said Mzimba district health officer Collins Mitambo.

He said rapid population growth in the city has led to congestion at the two major health facilities.

“As of now, the council has handed over the clinics to us and we have already started operating even though not on full-scale because they need extensive renovations and expansion,” he said.

Mitambo said they are only offering a few services at the re-opened centres, citing Zolozolo Clinic which is offering antenatal, family planning and HIV testing and counselling services only.
