Despite losing Escom sponsorship over two years ago, Diamonds went on to carry a theme aimed at fighting vandalism of the electricity company’s equipment during the Presidential Netball Championships’ national finals in Mzuzu.

The team carried banners and placards with the theme ‘Let’s fight against vandalism of Escom equipment’ before and during the Presidential contest that ran from Thursday to Saturday at Katoto Secondary School.

According to Diamonds general secretary Chimwemwe Bakali, they came up with the theme so that they can help in making sure the country is not denied uninterrupted electricity power due to theft of Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) equipment such as cables.

“It is also aimed at assuring corporate companies in the country that they can benefit a lot through us if they come in with any kind of sponsorship. As a team, we have a potential to disseminate various messages and at the same time we need corporate support to survive,” he said.

Diamonds were once a formidable side in domestic netball competitions until Escom pulled out their sponsorship. For the past two years, Diamonds have lost three title defences of GOtv Netball Champions League, OG Issa Southern Region Netball League and the Rainbow Paints Netball Series Championships to Complex Tigresses.
