Diplomats, MDF fight for war veterans

Britain and Germany have arranged a charity football match to be played on Saturday  at Silver Stadium to raise money for war veterans.

The announcement was made on Wednesday during a press conference at the British High Commissioner’s Residence in Lilongwe.

A team of British and German diplomats will play against Malawi Defence Force (MDF) to commemorate the First World War December truce.

The conference was attended by MDF Commander General Ignacious Maulana, British High Commissioner Michael Nevin and the Germany Ambassador Peter Woeste.

Nevin said it is important to honour war veterans considering the sacrifice they made to make the world a better place.

“I am urging people to come in their large numbers and support this noble cause,” he said.

Nevin announced that each player will pay K1 000 as participation fee and that gate charges will be pegged at K500.The match will be curtain-raised by a Super League encounter between Silver Strikers and Azam Tigers.

In his speech, General Maulana said it is vital to remember where we all are coming from.

“We all have our histories. It is important to remember where we are all coming from as a country. War veterans who fought for the better lives we are living today,” said Maulana.
