Malawi Government has underlined the need to build the capacity of local institutions that manages disaster management in the country.
Principal secretary and commissioner of the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (Dodma) Jeffrey Kanyinji said this on Friday in Blantyre during the graduation ceremony of 25 representatives of various local organisations who had undergone training in disaster risk reduction.
“Let me urge all the participants to work closely with Civil Protection Committees [CPC] and district disaster risk management officers [ADDRMO] so that they learn from you and thereby promoting sustainable efforts of the interventions under implementation,” he said.
Chairperson of the National Steering committee for the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme in Malawi, Robert Kawiya, said the training would help bring sanity in disaster risk management sector that has been riddled with various hazards and disasters.
Sustainable Rural Growth and Development Initiative executive director MenardNyirenda said the training was conducted to fill the gaps that were identified in disaster risk management.
