Debutants Disciples FC on Saturday emerged champions of this year’s FMB Under-20 League in Zomba when they beat State House FC 3-1 at Likangala Secondary School ground.

Goals from Maxwell Jabeli, Mark Chulu and McAbel Masangano were enough for their team to depose last year’s champions FC Preambles of the title.

The team played the game without the services of their top-notch striker Chipangano Sandukira as he was participating at the Puma Energy Malawi Open Tennis Championship in Blantyre.

This means Disciples FC have finished the league with 56 points from 22 games whereas runners-up FC Preambles have finished on 49 points. Police College Youth finished third with 46 points.

Sandukira is on course to win the golden boot award winner having scored 21 goals followed by Chikondi Kaitano of Tour Stream who has 17 goals.

However, FC Preambles coach William Chiwanda attributed his team’s poor performance to the suspension of three key players midway in the league.

The disciplinary committee of Zomba District Youth Football meted out punishment to the players for assaulting a referee and his assistant.

“Of course it is now water under the bridge and we will focus on regaining the title next season,” he claimed.
