Employers Consultative Association of Malawi (Ecam) has said proactive discipline and grievance handling enhances productivity while a human resource expert has encouraged organisations to implement performance related pay.

Speaking on Thursday during an employment relations clinic at Mount Soche in Blantyre, Ecam council member Emmanuel Chinunda said from the individual contract to the collective bargaining agreement, the element of discipline is of crucial importance.

“It is well known that aspects related to jobs including maintaining a sound working environment is key to addressing the strategic agenda of any organisation. Employees aligning themselves to the policies and regulations of a company form the foundation of addressing the common goals and common approaches to achieve the strategic vision of the company,” said Chinunda.

He pointed out that between 2010 and 2012 employers encountered numerous cases of labour unrest where in some cases disciplinary issues were evident.

Chinunda highlighted that as employers in the private sector their role is to contribute towards Malawi’s overall economic growth.

During the clinic which ran from Thursday to Friday, the participants discussed issues including formulation of disciplinary codes, the role of management and bargaining units, disciplinary action and the law, dispute resolution.

Main facilitators during the clinic included Daphter Namandwa, Mzonde Mvula, and Blessings Chinsinga.

Namandwa a seasoned human resources practitioner and former Ecam president in an interview on the sidelines of the clinic, encouraged companies to implement productivity related pay because it improves employees performance.

Namandwa argued that the productivity related pay is sustainable because employees are motivated to produce more and make more money at the same time.
