A teacher has been arrested on suspicion that he defiled a 13-year-old girl at Katete Primary School in Zomba. He is, however, admitted to Zomba Central Hospital (ZCH) after falling sick just as police wanted to take him to court.
Zomba Police spokesperson Patricia Sipiliano has confirmed both the arrest and admission of the teacher. She could not, however, be drawn to comment on his illness, saying for now that information is confidential.
“What I can confirm now is that the said teacher, who happens to be the school’s discipline master, is under arrest on allegations of defilement contrary to Section 138 of the Penal Code.
“He will be brought before the court of law as soon as doctors declare him fit enough to stand trial, otherwise it is true that he is admitted to [Zomba] Central Hospital ward 11,” she said adding that medical examination carried out on February 23 2016 at the facility revealed the girl was indeed defiled.
A source privy to the matter claimed that the teacher, who after defiling the Standard Six girl, went into hiding for two days, is feigning illness for fear of both the court and mob justice.
He said: “The community is bitter with his conduct. Had he not ducked he could have faced mob justice, otherwise as discipline master he abused his office because he created a case against the girl that she was involved in love affairs and should be disciplined, only to defile her at his house,” explained the source. n
