Do not stop students from sitting exams—Maneb

The Malawi National Examinations Board (Maneb) says it will not sit and watch candidates being prevented from sitting their national examinations because of school fees balances.
Maneb spokesperson Simeon Maganga said they have learnt that some private schools are barring candidates from writing the 2015 Junior Certificate of Education examination because of school fees balances despite being dully registered with the board.

He said: “To set the record straight, Maneb does not condone misbehaviour in schools. However, we are living in an age where human rights are respected, hence the need to tread carefully before making decisions based on emotions. Rules of natural justice demand that an accused person be given the chance to be heard before judgement is passed.”

Maganga said if the victims took the matter to court and won, and the court ordered that the examination be re-administered, Maneb would shoulder the burden of administering the examinations.

He said schools that have evidence of outstanding fees balances of some of their candidates should write Maneb to withhold examination results and not to issue certificates.

He said Maneb’s position on the matter is clear as fees balances have nothing to do with national examinations.

Maneb has since asked concerned candidates to go to their respective cluster centres and advise the supervisor to contact them on 1991 from TNM lines.
