“The place will offer shelter to people affected by hailstorms recently as they search for resources to renovate their houses,” he said.

Balaka District Council director of administration Darwin Mgoli, who is also acting district commissioner, asked community members to take good care of the facility.

“This facility is useful when disaster strikes; hence, the community should own it,” he said.

Village civil protection committee vice-chairperson Abdulrahman Mussa said community members participated in the project.

“The evacuation centre will be used for other events other than hosting people affected by disasters,” he said.

The centre was funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office of the United Kigndom under Prosper Project.
