Blantyre Zero (in yellow) take on ATU Ladies in last year’s contest

Soccer lovers should expect top women football action this weekend as the Donna’s Eggs Women Football Knockout Cup starts at regional level.

The Southern Region Women Football Committee (SRWFC) conducted the competition’s draw three days ago at the BAT ground, where it agreed to have only one encounter between Ntopwa Super Queens and King’s Ladies FC at the Escom ground in Blantyre tomorrow.

According to SRWFC general secretary, Immaculate Chiwaya, other fixtures involving Blantyre district teams, namely Blantyre Zero versus Dreams United, ATU Ladies against Heavens Stars and Evirom against loser of the Ntopwa/King’s match, will be played next week.

Chiwaya said Blantyre will usher into the quarter-finals four teams while Zomba, Balaka, Mulanje and Chikhwawa will send their champions into the crucial stage.

In the Centre, they were expected to conduct a draw at Lilongwe Community Centre ground yesterday, but the Central Region Women Football Committee (CRWFC) chairperson Shambashe Kadzamira assured that their games will kick off this weekend as well.

Her Northern Region counterpart, Clara Luhanga, said they will start their games involving eight Mzuzu-based teams.

Luhanga, however, said unlike in the other regions, they will hold the contest using a one-round league format so as to increase competition and also help in the development of new players.

“The eight Mzuzu-based teams will begin their matches this Saturday. They will later be joined by district champions from Nkhata Bay, Karonga, Rumphi and Chitipa,” said Luhanga.

According to Luhanga, today’s fixtures are as follows: Kwaito Sisters vs CY Sisters One @ Mzuzu CCAP ground; Gulf Sisters vs White Sisters @ Chibavi ground; Luwinga vs CY Sisters Two, and Ekwendeni Sisters vs Moyale Barracks.
