‘Don’t take babies to markets’

Zomba District Health Office (DHO) has advised communities in the district to avoid carrying babies to markets in the wake of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

Zomba DHO spokesperson Arnold Mndalira gave the advice on Wednesday at Chikamveka Primary School, Traditional Authority (T/A) Mwambo in the district during a trainin National Initiative for Civic Education

(Nice) Trust organised for Covid-19 voluntary workers.

He said: “Markets are usually crowded, which increases the threat of spreading the pandemic.

“Again, don’t ask friends or neighbours to accompany you to the market as this will increase the number of people.”

Mndalira also refuted claims that kachasu (locally-distilled spirit) can cure Covid-19.

Zomba Nice district civic education officer Kondwani Neba said they decided to conduct the training in line with their mandate to civic-educate people.

“Looking at the danger of Covid-19, we decided to partner the DHO to provide awareness to people,” he said.

One of the volunteer trainees, Alfred Mandalawe Junior, said they have learnt a lot from the training.

“There are misconceptions about Covid-19 in communities. This training has been an eye-opener as it has equipped us with the right information,” he said.
