Northern Region Commissioner of Police Peter Chasweka has bemoaned the vandalism of police formations during demonstrations.

He said this on Tuesday during the reopening of Chibavi Police Unit in Mzuzu City which was torched in 2019 by angry protesters during demonstrations against former Malawi Electoral Commission chairperson Jane Ansah.

“There was security lapse in the area due to the absence of police officers. We appeal to people not to vandalise the structure again,” said Chasweka.

On his part, Community Oversight Committee chairperson Patricial Nyoni said cases of theft rose in the absence of the police.

“A day could not pass without hearing that someone was robbed. So, we pledge to protect the police unit for our own good,” he said.

Mzuzu legislator Bennex Mwamlima (Malawi Congress Party-MCP) urged the police officers to work professionally.

The police unit structure was rehabilitated using resources contributed by the community.

Besides Chibavi Police Unit, the angry protesters also torched Chiputula Police Unit, Mzuzu City Council health department offices and Democratic Progressive Party regional office.
