Dowa man chops off wife’s arm, leg

Police in the central Malawi district of Dowa are hunting for a man who has allegedly chopped off his wife’s arm and leg following a family dispute. The woman was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital following loss of blood.

In an interview on Wednesday, Mponela Police spokesperson Kondwani Kandiado confirmed the incident, but said so far police have not established what led to the quarrel between the two who have been married since 1998.

“The incident happened around 7pm on Tuesday. The man [is suspected to have] killed the wife by completely chopping off her left arm and left leg. He sliced the woman’s arm and leg using a panga,” he said.

Kandiado identified the suspect as 47-year-old Henry Agabu Vunga of Mwamcheka Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Dzoole in Dowa while the woman has been identified as Tikhala Benson of Mbiya Village.

Police said the couple’s 10-year-old son alerted neighbours after he heard his mother screaming from the house.

However, Kandiado said when neighbours arrived at the scene, they found the woman in a pool of blood, two of her limbs chopped off.

He said people rushed her to Dowa District Hospital where she was pronounced dead and post-mortem indicated that it was due to the severe bleeding.

The event is a replicate of a 2006 incident in the same district where an irate husband, Herbert Mankhwala, cut off both arms of his wife, Marietta Samuel. However, the wife survived the attack. The husband went to jail.
