Dowa First Grade Magistrate Court has sentenced a  40-year-old man to 10 years and nine months imprisonment and with hard labour for breaking and stealing into the house of Maxwell Shawa money amounting to  K150 000.

The suspect, Malingana Phiri and his four other accused, who are at large, broke into the house of Shawa in Thebwe Village in Dowa, where they stole the money and other items.

Dowa police spokesperson Richard Kaponda confirmed saying the suspects used a gun and panga knives to threaten the complainant.

“However, after his shout villagers came and managed to get hold of Phiri, who was severely beaten while his four friends ran away,” said Kaponda.

“Police prosecutor Ivy Sangwa told the court that the suspect stole a lot of money besides assaulting the complainant; hence, a stiffer sentence to deter other would be offenders,” said Kaponda.
