Downpour mars South junior basketball action in ZA

Heavy rains which fell Saturday afternoon marred what could have been an exciting K500 000 (about $1 470) Southern Zone Junior Basketball competition at Zomba Catholic Secondary School.

A slippery court surface made life difficult for the players to negotiate during a curtain-raiser match between Malindi and Police Secondary School.

Referee Takondwa Jana and his assistant had no option but to abandon the game in the third-quarter, when Malindi were leading 47-37.

The second game involving Zomba Catholic Secondary School and Cobbe Barracks CDSS also failed to take place.

Junior basketball director for the South, Hope Chisamanga, said the games will be rescheduled.

“We are going to sit down as a committee and come with a date for the replay fixtures. It is just unfortunate that this has happened when Malindi were leading. I hope they are going to bear with the situation which was beyond human control,” he said.

Chisamanga said eight teams will qualify for the regional finals with three each from Zomba and Blantyre divisions whereas Balaka and Thyolo-Mulanje divisions will contribute one each.
