The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) says it is ready with the case involving police officers, who are suspected to have killed people during the July 20 2011 demonstrations.

Five police officers in Blantyre and four in Lilongwe were arrested in May this year, a move that raised hope that the case would be handled with haste.

However, the DPP’s office has hinted that it is only waiting for the court to set a date.

The civil society organised the demonstrations to protest against economic and human rights hardships.

Former president late Bingu wa Mutharika described those that died as thieves who were or wanted to steal from shops.

Despite that, Mutharika appointed a commission of inquiry, which faulted police and recommended prosecution.

Ministry of Justice spokesperson Apoche Itimu said yesterday government is now ready with the case.

“We have filed charge sheets and served disclosures, we are just waiting for the court to set a date of hearing,” said Itimu, in an e-mail response.

Those arrested from Ndirande Police sub-Stations in Blantyre were Paul Mussa, Kelvin Nyirenda, Benedicto Dzombe, Mahomed Kulusinje and Lemekezo Mikuti.

They were arrested by a high powered delegation from National Police Headquarters in Lilongwe.

Police officers that were arrested in Lilongwe were Sub-Inspector Kamwala of Lumbadzi police, Sergeant Makokezi of B Company, Sergeant Kamwana from Mchinji and Constable Lobo of Kawale Police Station.
