The governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) vice-president George Chaponda has distanced the party from reports that it is supporting one of the presidential candidates for the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) elective assembly.

Incumbent FAM president Walter Nyamilandu is expected to face Wilkins Mijiga and Willy Yabwanya Phiri during the polls in Salima on December 12.

According to rumour mills, the political party has weighed its support towards one of the three candidates (name withheld).

“We have heard about some candidates claiming they are being supported by the DPP. But we want to categorically distance the party from such claims. As far as we are concerned, DPP does not interfere with the running of football in any way,” said Chaponda.

“Elections are supposed to be done in a democratic process. Therefore, individuals should not try to advance their interests or goals to use the name of the party. We are not supporting anyone.” n
