The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) last Saturday donated 100 bags of maize and 10 bags of beans to Chitipa District Hospital.

Speaking during the presentation, Minister of Information, Tourism and Civic Education Jappie Mhango said the food is testimony to that government is concerned about Malawians in dire need of assistance.

Chitipa district commissioner Grace Chirwa commended the DPP for the donation, which she said has come at a time when the hospital was struggling to feed its patients.

She said: “ We are grateful for the maize donation which has come at the right time to alleviate food shortages at the hospital.”

She assured the minister the food will be put to its intended use .

Chitipa DHO Moffat Dzinkambani described the donation as a big relief to the hospital.

He said in the past months, patients at the hospital have been surviving on food donations from Church of Central African Presbytery (CCAP), The Roman Catholic Church and Chitipa Zokonda Amayi Women.

DPP has also donated food items to Nkhata Bay, Rumphi, Mzimba and Karonga district hospitals.Meanwhile,Mhango commended Nkhata Bay district health office (DHO) for cultivating a four-hectare maize garden to counter food insufficiency at the hospital and appealed to other DHOs to follow suit.

He said: “If all DHOs can be as innovative as the Nkhata Bay DHO , surely some of the challenges paralysing operations of our hospitals will be minimised.” n
