Drama as Malawi’s civil servants march

Civil servants in the northern Malawi city of Mzuzu conducted a dramatic peaceful march, a development that attracted laughter among spectators and police who were on the ground to ensure security.

The civil servants marched from the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) premises to Mzuzu Civic Centre wailing like bereaved families. Some of the wailers were seen being consoled by others.

They also chanted funeral songs to signify the pain they
were experiencing because of poor working conditions.

The striking workers were a third group of people to conduct peaceful demonstrations after the July 20 2011 fracas.

They presented the petition to Mzuzu City Council director of administration Victor Masina who assured them that their petition will be sent to the President.

Mzuzu University (Mzuni) students were the first to conduct a similar peaceful demonstration followed by the Consumers Association of Malawi (Cama) on January 17.
