Mhango, who was driving a Toyota Land Cruiser, registration BS 5432, hit a motorcycle that carried an operator and two female passengers near Mzuzu Stadium.

Police are yet to establish the particulars of the operator, but the businessperson has been identified as Evelyn Shawa, 54, of Gwazeru Village, T/A Khosolo in Mzimba District.

“The other passenger, Loveness Mwafulirwa, sustained injuries and was taken to St John’s Hospital,” said Bwanali.

He said a number of lives are being lost in road accidents, some of which could have been prevented if road users observed road signs and respected other road users.

“We also would like to appeal to motor bike taxi operators to ensure that they carry one passenger at a time,” said Bwanali.

Mhango has since been charged with causing death by reckless driving. He is expected to appear before court soon, he said. n
