Police in Ntcheu have arrested a 54-year-old driver Bannet Chingalu for allegedly stealing 200 bags of Urea fertiliser.
Ntcheu Police Station spokesperson Rebecca Kwisongole said the police got information that a 10-tonne Leyland truck regisration LA 3919, was involved in an accident at Kalitsiro Village along the M1 in Ntcheu District.
She said it is alleged that on October 22, Chingalu was assigned to ferry 200 bags of fertiliser from Liwonde to Lilongwe.
Kwisongole said upon arrival at Kalitsiro, the driver called his employer and reported that he was involved in a road accident.
“When the police got the information, they rushed to the scene where upon thorough assessment, they were convinced that there was no accident as he alleged and the truck was empty.
“Investigations were instituted leading to the recovery of some of the bags that were hidden in Mozambique,” she said.
Meanwhile, the police are trying to recover the remaining bags.
Chingalu, who comes from Mpando Village, Traditional Authority Mpando in Ntcheu, is yet to be taken to court.
