Majuni Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) in Mangochi has hailed MultiChoice Malawi for introducing Digital Satellite Television (DStv) education bouquet at the school saying it has improved the school’s performance in national examinations.

Headmaster for the school Kinly Chavula said this last week when MultiChoice visited the school to appreciate the impact of the project on the school.

Chavula said the school’s pass rate at Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) has improved by 35 percent in five years.

Majuni CDSS received a television set, VCR player and video tapes containing education programmes in 2008.The previous year, the school has scored 36 percent in MSCE. First year of the project saw the school scoring 48 percent. In 2009 the pass rate increased to 51 and now stands at 71 percent.

“DStv education bouquet has helped us a lot and our goal is to register 100 percent pass rate and we believe we will do it. We did a research to quiz the students on subjects they learnt on chalk board and on television and many scored better marks in subjects taught using television,” said Chavula, while adding that class attendance to these classes are good as students are attracted to watching the videos.

He, however, said they could have achieved 100 percent pass rate, but they are let down by the programmes in the tapes. He said the tapes do not cover all the topics in the syllabus.

One of the form four students, Mercy Kakhobwe said she prefers learning through television to chalk board because the lesson can be watched several times and give the same content, it can be paused and it also helps in improving listening skills and English speaking.

Multichoice Malawi sales and marketing manager Chimwemwe Nyirenda hailed the school for properly utilising the facilities.

“I am very happy about Majuni, they were the second to receive the facilities, but they still look brand new. Some schools lost theirs.

“We have heard their complaint and we have promised them that we will replace the VCR player with a High Definition PVR decorder so that they have access to many recorded programmes,” said Nyirenda.

Multichoice Malawi through the MultiChoice Resource Centre (MRC) programme which was launched nine years ago has given Television sets, High Definition PVR decorders and DStv education bouquet to 40 secondary schools across Malawi.
