Dwindling fish worries Malawi

Listen to this article

Malawi Government says continued dwindling fish population in the country’s water bodies is threatening the fishing industry that currently employs over 1.5 million people.

Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development Erica Maganga said this last week in Mangochi during the training of fishers.

Maganga said Malawi, at both small and large-scale fishing, has over 40 000 fishers.

Africa Caribbean Pacific (ACPII) programme regional manager for Southern Africa Leone Tarabusi, whose organisation sponsored the training, said they wanted to train fishers in sustainable fishing that follows accepted standards.
