The Wild Life and Environmental Society of Malawi (Wesm) has warned that if government does not introduce strict measures to protect Dzalanyama Forest Reserve, the forest will be depleted further.

Speaking during a meeting with communities around the forest held in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Kalolo, Wesm field coordinator Bentry Banda said there is need for team work in saving the forest.

He said the meeting was organised to sensitise people on how they can actively combat the forest’s depletion.

“Let me urge you to guard the forest jealously as all the effects from its depletion will hit these communities first before they spread to other areas.

“Some of you are also taking part in depleting the forest, but I advise you to stop,” said Banda

The organisation is also assisting communities with tree seedlings to plant for firewood and timber.
