Tears, emotions and drama punctuated the long-awaited launch of Malawi’s sole talent show, E Wallet, as the search for the winner takes it all competition rolled out Saturday night at Sunbird Capital’s grand marquee.

All the 26 acts performed in front of an impressive crowd and three judges Marvin Hanke, singer Angella ‘Tigris’ Mizinga and Dumisani Mfune.

While some of the contestants in the singing category could miss a key, many put up a gallant performance which was spiced by dances from other categories.

Among the highlights of the grand launch was the singing sensation 13-year-old Tionge Kanthungo who dazzled the audience with her strong voice, energy and stage movements as she performed Betty Medler’s From a Distance.

However, the night was not short of drama as one contestant, 18-year-old Comfort Chimombo, was disqualified for indiscipline despite putting up a spectacular performance.

“It is sad that we have to lose some of the contestants this way but Chimombo has been disqualified for coming and performing while drunk. This is total breach of rules and regulations of the E Wallet show,” said Chrissie Tafadzwa Kanjira who was emceeing the event.

Teary Chimombo tried in vain to apologise to the organisers but his efforts hit a wall, forcing him to cry uncontrollably.

“Before the show kicked off, we had a session with all the contestants and we briefed them on the rules of the 2012 E Wallet Talent Show. Drinking is not part of this event. We want to build a very responsible youthful generation,” said organising chairperson Felix Njawala.
