Eagles’ home record threatens leaders
Surprise leaders, Blantyre United, test the waters of their TNM Super League title credentials today when they meet Blue Eagles who hardly know a defeat at Nankhaka Stadium.
Eagles, who are yet to transfer their convincing cup form to the league, go into the match with scales tipped in their favour. Coach Deklerk Msakakuona’s men have lost once at home in the league this season.
Eagles general secretary Ackis Muwanga said home backing would be a big factor in this battle against United who have defied odds to lead the league for three weeks. They have 45 points from 22 games.
“When at home, you use all acceptable means to win and that is what we will do. And the good thing is that, in the last two seasons, we have not lost to Blantyre United in the league,” said Muwanga whose side has a wealth of talent such as Patrick Masanjala, Innocent Bokosi and Micium Mhone.
Masanjala can be handy with his versatility either in defence or as a midfield screener, Bokosi bangs them in consistently while Mhone terrorises opponents off the flanks.
On Thursday, United coach Elia Kananji said his charges were doing final touches to a strategy of ending their inferior run against the Carlsberg Cup champions.
“Since getting into the league, we only beat them once in 2010. It is hard to understand why, even when we play them on their bad day, they still beat us. It is critical that we get a result as any slip up could change our prospects,” said Kananji.
United’s defence has since received a boost with defender Wachimwa Sadiki receiving a clean bill of health from injury sidelines. The Blantyre side will once again pin their winning hopes of an unstoppable attacking trio of Sparrow Msowoya, Brown Mizeye and Tizgobere Kumwenda.
In other games today, Azam Tigers host table anchors Kabwafu at Kamuzu Stadium. The Mzuzu rookies travel to Zomba tomorrow (Sunday) for a date with Red Lions.
