Earthquake hits Karonga, Chitipa

Parts of the Northern Region had a turbulent countdown to the New Year following a spate of earthquakes two days ago.

The earthquakes hit parts of Chitipa and Karonga on Wednesday around 10pm, sending tremors all the way to Mzuzu.

No casualties were reported in the affected districts, but people of Karonga fear it could be a repeat of a tragedy that hit the district in December 2009.

In an interview on Thursday, Karonga district commissioner Rosemary Moyo allayed the deepening anxiety by confirming no house, goods and lives had been affected by the spate coinciding with the shutdown of the year.

“I am aware of the earthquake, but no losses of lives and property. The council is closely monitoring the situation to ensure rapid response in case of disasters,” she said.
