EC’s strategic plan to improve voter role
The Electoral Commission (EC) has said it is implementing a strategic plan to help the commission regulate its activities efficiently during voting and non-voting periods.
EC’s chairperson of media, civic and voter education committee Nancy Tembo said this on Monday during the opening of EC national consultative meeting on the strategic planning process in Blantyre.
She said the strategic plan was also developed to change the voters’ roll which had been neglected in the previous years and help people understand the voting processes.
She said various stakeholders, including chiefs and the academia, have been involved in its development.
“Running an organisation without a strategic plan is like flying a plane without a compass. As a commission, we will put every effort to ensure that we do not fail by failing to plan. The strategic plan we are developing is a document that will guide us towards the ideal election management body we want to be.
“The strategic plan is still under consultation and this meeting is aimed at observations from all stakeholders in order to improve it. The commission is expected to launch it by the end of this year since presidential and parliamentary elections are near.
“As a commission, we want to clear the perception that EC belongs to the government through this strategic plan. The strategic plan also stands to clear all unfair advantages that candidates have during the voting process,” said Tembo.
The European Union is funding the process under the Democratic Governance Programme.
