The Employers Consultative Association of Malawi (Ecam) last week organised a training workshop on labour laws and employee relations aimed at equipping employers with skills to avoid and handle disputes.

In an interview on the sidelines of the workshop which took place at Ryalls Hotel in Blantyre, Ecam programme officer Emmanuel Magomero said the workshop was intended to equip participants on labour laws and employee relations to avoid taking petty issues to the Industrial Relations Court.

“This conference will enlighten the participants on how to handle labour related issues. These participants are mostly from human resources background but anyone who deals with personnel was also invited. After doing this training course in Blantyre we will conduct another one at Nkopola in Mangochi depending on demand,” said Magomero.

Facilitators of the workshop included senior officers from the Industrial Relations Court and the Ministry of Labour.

The workshop presentations touched on international labour standards, the International Labour Organisation, labour conventions ratified by Malawi, and the Malawi constitution.

The training also touched on the Labour Relations Act, the Employment Act, and the Occupational Safety, Health and Welfare Act.
