ECM urges faithful to reflect on Pastoral Letter

The Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) has made a fresh appeal to the Catholic faithful to reflect on the contents of the April 2018 Pastoral Letter as the May 21 2019 Tripartite Elections approach ECM secretary general the Reverend Henry Saindi made the call on Saturday during St. John’s College of Nursing and Midwifery 55 years celebrations at St. Peter’s Cathedral in Mzuzu.

Saindi: Vote wisely

He said Malawi needs to vote for leaders who have the welfare of its citizens at heart if the country is to develop.

“As the church, we have the duty to remind you to vote wisely. Do not vote for leaders who have already shown you characteristics of greed and selfishness, among others,” Saindi said.

He said the May 2019 Tripartite Elections are the only opportunity for Malawians to elect leaders of their choice; hence a reminder for the Catholic faithful to vote wisely and reflect on the contents of the Pastoral Letter which outlines qualities of a good leader before going to the polls.
Saindi, however, said the church is not endorsing anyone but can only advise them to vote wisely.

Earlier, the Public Affairs Committee (PAC) hailed the Catholic bishops for the Pastoral Letter, describing it as a reflection of the widespread discontent with the country’s prevailing socio-economic conditions.

In April this year, Catholic bishops issued a Pastoral Letter read in all Catholic churches nationwide titled A Call for a New Era in Malawi where they stressed that Malawi needs a change of direction.

The Pastoral Letter urged Malawians to help create an era where truth, fairness and respect for the dignity of all are observed.

The Pastoral Letter came a few days after civil society organisations staged protests where they gave President Peter Mutharika and his government 90 days to solve the economic challenges.
