“We are desperate to defend the crown, but our financial muscle seems to restrict us. We, therefore, urge companies and individuals to help us,” said Tengani.

“Their coming in will be more of a partnership because they will also benefit through their banners to be attached on athletes throughout the competition. Those wishing to help can call me on 0999 105 310 or 0888 601 665.”

The race covers 50.9 kilometres around mountain ridges south of Viphya Forest Reserve and 100 contestants, including some from England, France, Belgium and South Africa take part.

To win a team crown, a registered cycling club needs to have at least three of  its athletes completing the race within the fastest average time of two hours 24 minute.

Last year, Eco-Active Club achieved the feat following the exploits of Tsoyo, Kathumba and Kufakuwawa.

They crossed the finish line in 2:11:50 hrs, 2:26:15hrs and 2:35:15hrs respectively.

Eco-Active Cycling Club was established last year, to promote conservation of the environment and fight against climate change through the sport.n
