Education key to crime eradication—police

Blantyre Police Station says it has engaged religious and education communities to promote education among children to fight against crime in the city.

The police said this during a Primary School Mock Examination Awards Presentation Ceremony at Blantyre Girls Primary School on Friday.

Through the Victim Support Unit (VSU), Blantyre Police Station engaged the clergy, primary schools and communities to urge parents to support their children’s education for them to become productive citizens of the country.

Msosa (R) and Mjima during the event

Ndirande Police Sub-Station officer-in-charge Michael Msosa urged parents and communities to avoid abusing their children but to encourage them to go to school.

He said there was a link between crime and literacy levels.

“People might be wondering why police is involved in the award of top 20 students for Ndirande Education Zone. It is because if children are educated, they generally do not engage in crime but concentrate on productive things,” Msosa said.

Blantyre Urban district education manager Evelyn Mjima commended the police for the approach which she said will have a positive impact on children’s education in the zone.

On behalf of the religious community, Bishop Edward Kankhwani of New Creation Church and Sheik Hussein Madi of Ndirande Main Masjid also welcomed the initiative and pledged their support. n
