El-Adawy: Media should unite people

New Egyptian Ambassador Maher El-Adawy has urged media practitioners to always facilitate national unity and put the interests of the people of Malawi and Africa first.

The envoy was speaking on Friday when he hosted an informal breakfast with bureau chiefs and other senior journalists at his residence in Lilongwe.

“Use your powerful and influential positions responsibly. Only united Malawians will build this nation and only Africans will build Africa, as other well-wishers can only help in the indigenous efforts,” El-Adawy stated.

He said Egypt’s new President Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi has directed that cooperation with other countries in Africa, including Malawi, should be Egypt’s top priority.

“Please consider me as a brother. My work here is to help the people of Malawi in any way possible. I pray to God everyday that the people [in Malawi] will continue uniting,” he said.

He stressed that Malawi and other countries can learn from Egypt as a nation that experienced turbulent and social incidents several months previously, only to bounce back with hope.

El-Adawy said Malawi and Egypt, which share vibrant bilateral relations dating back to Malawi’s independence in 1964, will continue promoting their ties by mutually implementing more development projects, including in the fields of health, human resource development, tourism, defence and security.
