Rookies Ekwendeni Hammers rose two places up to third in the TNM Super League after beating Mighty Tigers 1-0 at Mzuzu Stadium on Sunday.

Chawanangwa Gumbo scored the only goal in the 19th minute.

Hammers have 33 points from 20 games, seven points behind leaders Silver Strikers and six adrift of second-placed Nyasa Big Bullets who have each played a game less.

Karonga United, who started on a poor note this season, are fourth with 32 points from 20 games.

Mkandawire: We’re still in pursuit for the title

Mighty Wanderers, who face Red Lions tomorrow at Mpira Stadium in Chiwembe Township, Blantyre, have dropped two places to fifth. They have 31 points from 19 games.

In a post-match interview, Hammers coach Eston Kadenge Mwafulirwa said despite the win, he was not happy with his charges’ performance.

“We just didn’t turn up today. The solace, of course is that we have won,” he said.

The club’s patron Gift Mkandawire said they still want to meet their target of finishing in the top four.

“We are still in pursuit of the title, but if we fail to achieve that then a top four finish will be satisfactory considering this is only our debut season,” he said.

On the other hand, Tigers coach Trevor Kajawa, whose side anchors the 16-team league, said his troops did not play according to instructions.

“We did not do well. We ended up losing balls, particularly in the first half. In the second half, we were organised, but could not score,” he said.

In another TNM Super League match, Chitipa United and Karonga United played out a goalless draw at Karonga Stadium.
