The Forum for the Elderly in Malawi has unveiled plans to have a constitution to cement its existence in the country.

The forum, which was launched in December aims at sharing ideas and being models to the youth.

“These are citizens, who are beyond the age of sixty and whose fountain of knowledge and experience can be tapped to good use for generations to come,” said interim chairperson Songiso Mvalo.

On Sunday, the group met in Mzuzu to map the way forward. The meeting attracted intellectuals such as former Chancellor College lecturer Professor Kings Phiri and Professor Joseph Utah of Mzuzu University.

The forum mentioned three objectives for its formation. First to provide elders in Malawi with the opportunity to interact and share personal experiences and, in the process, ensure that important aspects of Malawi’s history, social and culture are not forgotten.

Secondly, to provide an opportunity to the younger generation to interact with senior citizens and learn about the past as it relates to the present.

Finally, to provide an opportunity for the flow of historical and other social information that can be collated for the publication for future generations after validation.

Among other activities, the group plans to make consultations with senior citizens across the country. Mvalo said although the forum has started in Mzuzu, consultations with other regions have already started and are encouraging.

“We have an account with NBS Bank number 0030811976012 and we appeal for donation which will help to run the organisation,” said Mvalo.
