Following a string of losses that have plunged the team into the relegation ditch, Embangweni FC coach Etson Kadenge Mwafulirwa has resigned.

Mwafulirwa confirmed throwing in the towel in an interview, but declined to say why.

Under Mwafulirwa, Embangweni defeated big teams such as Escom United and drew with the likes of Big Bullets and Mighty Wanderers.

Team manager Frank Ngoma confirmed in a telephone interview on Friday that Mwafulirwa is no longer with the team. But he was quick to say that Mwafulirwa was not a full-time coach.

“Yes, Mwafulirwa is not with us. It is now two weeks since he left, but he was just helping the team since he is a businessperson,” Ngoma said.

The team is now in the  hands of general secretary Denis Mumba who also started with a bang as Embangweni beat Civo 1-0 at Mzuzu Stadium last week.

Some Embangweni fans and officials at some point criticised Mwafulirwa for leaving the team in the hands of other untrained coaches which resulted in undeserved losses.

“It is good that he has resigned because at times the club did not deserve the losses,” said a fan Kadumuliro Gondwe of Bolero in Rumphi.
