If I were

Emmanuel Fabiano

Minister of Education, Science and Technology, I would find ways to address grievances raised by teachers to avoid a looming strike.

If I were Fabiano, I would appreciate that teachers have had outstanding grievances such as promotion and salary arrears which are crucial for their motivation.

Oh yes, bwana Fabiano, I would realise that while my colleagues and I lead comfortable lives because we get hefty packages, teachers who play an important role in the development of the country, get peanuts. If they are not motivated, it has the potential to affect the country’s education standards.

If only I were the Minister of Education, Science and Technology I would realise that when my ministry turns down a request by the Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) to try and find a solution to their problems, then it raises questions about the seriousness of my ministry.

If I were the minister, I would appreciate that there are times when government delays to pay teachers salaries, a situation which is grossly unfair.

Of course, that is if only I happened to be Garry Chirwa; MP, Minister of Education, Science and Technology, but unfortunately it is just a mere wish. n
