Rise and Shine

Empower the people around you

Some of the employees fail to go on leave because they believe that their absence will badly affect the performance of their organisation. Either this is an over-estimation of one’s value to the employer or the person in question has simply not empowered the people around him or her to allow partial but smooth delivery of the services during the absence.

Empowering the team around you is very important. We cannot be working as if we will be an eternal officer in our position.

Empowerment is not simply asking other people to act in your position when you are away. Empowerment needs to be a holistic and consistent matter. If you are a manager or supervisor, your whole approach to how you coordinate and manage your team needs to show empowerment.

Do you give your members some work which you leave to their total control, command and ownership? Do you trust your team to make their own daily schedule of their activities? Do you avoid micro-managing your team all the time? Of course, there will always be some members that may from time to time be in great and real need of being micro-managed: when they miss each and every deadline and they cannot deliver on their own.

By empowering your staff, you enable them to learn new and more advanced skills. These are the skills and competences that they would not acquire without being empowered.

This way, your staff find their job worthwhile as it gives them a great opportunity for professional growth and advancement. When they get empowered they gradually believe that they are developing towards being able to do the next job—towards eligibility for a promotion. This way your staff will be highly motivated and happy to go the extra mile working. They will be highly ‘engaged’ staff.

Another great benefit for empowering your staff is that you become efficient and effective in your delivery. When your staff members are empowered, they tend to be very productive.

They will do things that ordinarily you would have been expected to do. Once they are empowered, your team are competent and motivated to do a good portion of your work, on your behalf. Of course, you may need to spend some time training and coaching your team in early days of empowering them until they acquire the necessary skills and competences to be able to work independently.

With empowerment of staff comes the loyalty and staff retention. Highly empowered staff will feel so indebted to you and the company or organisation because by empowering them, you are equipping them for tomorrow’s jobs plus you are enjoy their current job and look forward to the next day at work.

Indeed, when the day comes that you go—they may be in a position to take your job and you will be a very proud, satisfied and happy person to see one of your team members rising to take your job, as you too move on to better and greater opportunities.

When each member of the team feels empowered, you are on a good path to building a high performance team. The effect is that as a team, you become highly productive. Such a team will be respected by all.

In turn, even other staff outside your team will want to work for you because they know they will be empowered, grow professionally and belong to a high performance team. The great delivery of your team means that you will also gain the credit and rewards as the leader behind such great success.

We have discussed the importance of empowering the people around you especially your team. We have seen how the empowered team become highly motivated, highly productive and very royal to you and the company.
