Emulate dogs, Chiumia tells Police officers

Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Grace Chiumia says she believes members of the Malawi Police Service (MPS) could be professional if they were loyal and disciplined as their dogs.

She said this on Tuesday when she inspected some of the service’s directorates and departments, including the dogs section, at MPS headquarters in Lilongwe’s Area 30. best-police-dogs-breeds

“I got very impressed by how the dogs behaved when I was being shown around. Yes, these dogs are similar to those we keep in the neighbourhoods in all aspects of nature.

“However, they [the former] stand out among the rest courtesy of the training, loyalty and discipline; something I think you can apply and master in your various professional endeavours.”

She said it was confusing to find dogs behaving better than human beings in current settings.

“There is just too much criticism directed at our officers whenever they try to do their job. There is need for mindset change,” said Chiumia.

Responding to the concerns police raised the minister raised earlier, Inspector General (IG) of Police Lexten Kachama pledged transparency to ensure his charges remain motivated.

He said, in line with the Public Reforms Programmes, the Police is changing its establishments to accommodate more promotions to deserving officers.

Said Kachama: “There are a lot of aspects to consider before the administration promotes anybody in the service. However, I agree that we should not always wait for some officers to retire for others to get promoted.

“Hence, we are now talking of creating some more establishments within the service. Consultations are already underway with relevant authorities to effect them.”

The IG’s office is mandated to promote an officer to any rank depending on conduct, length of service, performance and existing vacancies within the service, among others.
