Madinga was speaking on Friday at Malawi Institution of Engineers (MIE) fundraising dinner and dance in Blantyre.

He said innovation is crucial in setting priorities for the country’s short, medium and long term plans that aim to alleviate poverty and create wealth.

Madinga said: “Engineers’ expertise is crucial in generating new technologies, knowledge and innovation for the realisation of sustainable development goals [SDGs]. Your guidance is needed more than ever and remember that your decisions today will have a great impact on the future.”

He stressed the need to create collaborative cultures, supportive infrastructure and sensitive measurement system to facilitate effective and efficient acquisition and deployment of new knowledge and innovation.

He urged interaction among people of varied professions to sustain innovation and businesses.

MIE president, Andrew Thawe, pledged his institution’s commitment towards promoting professionalism and excellence among engineers.

He said it was for this reason that the institution is fighting for the amendment and replacement of Engineers Act with a new Malawi Institution of Engineers (MIE) Act, which he said is aligned with the present professional and engineering environment.

“MIE Act will play a critical role in safeguarding the profession and help to create a conducive environment for spearheading technological development,” he said.

Meanwhile, MIE is set to hold its annual general meeting (AGM) in September at Sunbird Nkopola Lodge in Mangochi.
